ASTM E436-03 What is the Drop Weight Impact Testing Machine?

Main features:

A drop weight tear Test machine measures how pipeline steel, thick steel and ferritic steel resist fracture when struck by a heavy falling hammer. Cooling, feeding, hammer lifting, impact, specimen collection and hammer capture run as one automatic cycle, with multi-channel safeguards protecting both the equipment and the operator.

What are the key parameters? Maximum impact energy is 40,000 J, minimum 15,000 J. The main hammer body weighs 1,180 kg to within ±0.5 and falls from 1,275 to 2,600 mm, reaching 5 to 7.14 m/s at the specimen. Height measurement resolution is ±5 mm, error within ±10 mm.

What about impact geometry? The hammer blade is hardened to HRC 58-62 with a curvature radius of R25 ±0.1 mm, and its centre deviates no more than ±1.5 mm from the bearing centre. Specimens sit on a 254 ± 1.5 mm span and measure (305+0.5) x (76.2+1.5) x 3-40 mm. Power supply: 380 V ±10%, 50 Hz.

Which standards apply? GB/T 8363-2007, ASTM E436-03 and API RP 5L3-96.

Typical users are steel mills, pipe manufacturers, research institutes, inspection bodies and technical supervision departments.
